iOS 27 Safari: Automatic Tab Topics and Notify Me Explained

If you keep several Safari tabs open while comparing products, finding the right page can become a chore. In iOS 27, Apple introduces two features: suggested topics for related tabs and Safari Notify Me for webpage changes, such as restocks or price changes. Apple's iOS 27 overview describes both.

The important distinction is that automatic topics are suggestions in Safari's tab view. They are not the same as the Tab Groups you deliberately create and name yourself. Here's what Apple actually documents, how to use the topic controls, and what to check before expecting the features on your iPhone.

What changed in Safari with iOS 27?

Apple says Safari can automatically organize open tabs into suggested topics so related pages are easier to find. Its iPhone User Guide says those suggestions are based on browsing history. Once at least two tabs can be grouped together, a suggested topic can appear in the tab screen, with the related pages shown as thumbnails.

That is useful when your tabs naturally fall into clusters: perhaps laptop reviews and travel pages. You can inspect a suggested topic and move its pages into a named Tab Group. A suggestion does not mean Safari has saved those pages as a Tab Group.

Safari Notify Me addresses a different need. Apple describes it as monitoring pages for changes and alerting you, giving a price change or restock as examples. Apple's public iOS overview does not spell out every supported webpage, the exact notification setup sequence, or a guarantee that every change will be detected. Avoid relying on it as your only way to catch a limited-time purchase or other urgent update.

How to turn on automatic tab topics

Apple's documented path starts inside Safari on a supported iPhone:

  1. Open Safari and tap the Tabs button.
  2. Tap the Organize button in the tab screen.
  3. Select Automatically Create Topics.
  4. Continue opening relevant pages in tabs. When Safari finds two or more tabs that fit a topic, it can show a suggested topic in the tab screen.

Tap a topic to preview its tabs, then tap a thumbnail to open a page. To see more actions, open the topic and tap More. Apple lists Copy Links, Move Tabs to an existing Tab Group, Close Tabs, and feedback options such as Looks Good and Something Isn't Right. If you prefer to organize pages yourself, tap Organize in the tab screen and choose Never to turn the automatic feature off. The appearance of suggestions depends on the tabs Safari can group; switching the setting on does not guarantee that a topic will appear immediately. Source: Apple iPhone User Guide.

Automatic topics versus your own Tab Groups

Think of a suggested topic as a temporary way to browse a set of related open pages. A Tab Group is something you create, name, and manage yourself. Apple's guide says you can move tabs from a suggested topic into a Tab Group. To create a group manually, open Safari's tab screen, touch and hold a tab, choose Move Tab, then New Tab Group. Name it and save it.

For a quick comparison, suggested topics may be enough. For research you plan to revisit, use a named group. Claims that iOS 27 automatically builds permanent folders of everything you read go beyond Apple's documentation.

What does Safari Notify Me do?

According to Apple's iOS 27 page, Safari Notify Me monitors a webpage for changes and alerts you when there is something to act on. Apple gives price changes and restocks as examples. That could save you from repeatedly refreshing a product page, although a website's content and the way it changes can affect what any monitoring feature notices.

The official overview confirms what Notify Me is for, but the support material used here does not establish a precise sequence of buttons for enabling it or an exhaustive list of supported websites. This guide therefore does not invent a menu path. Safari Notify Me is distinct from a store's mailing list, a site's push notifications, and third-party price trackers.

Which iPhones can use these features?

Installing iOS 27 is not, by itself, proof that every Apple Intelligence feature will appear. Apple's tab-organizing support guide says Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 or later requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later. It also warns that Apple Intelligence is not available in every language or region and that usage limits may apply. Apple's broader iOS 27 page lists additional iPhones that can install the operating system; that compatibility list should not be mistaken for the requirements of the intelligent tab feature.

For a missing Automatically Create Topics option, first check your iPhone model and installed iOS version, then Apple's current language and regional availability notes. Do not assume that Siri AI's rollout rules are identical to the rules for every other Safari feature. Apple's public overview also does not provide enough detail to promise that Notify Me has identical availability on every iOS 27 device, so verify that separately on the device before publishing a device-specific claim.

Should you turn automatic topics on?

Try it if you regularly leave many related tabs open. It costs little effort to inspect the suggested topics, and you can turn the feature off from the Organize menu if you prefer the old tab view. Be selective about what you keep: close tabs you no longer need, and move important pages into a named Tab Group rather than relying on a suggestion to remain in the same place.

Safari itself is built into iOS; use Apple's normal software-update route rather than a third-party “iOS 27 Safari download” site.

Quick answers

Do I need to create the suggested topics myself? No. When automatic topics are enabled and Safari finds related tabs, it can suggest them. You can still create a named Tab Group manually.

Can I stop Safari from organizing tabs automatically? Yes. In Safari's tab screen, open Organize and choose Never, as described in Apple's iPhone User Guide.

Will Notify Me alert me about every sale or restock? Apple gives those as examples of changes it can monitor. It does not promise universal coverage or instant alerts for every site in the official overview, so check important pages directly as well.

Why don't I see the new controls? Confirm your iOS version, device eligibility, and current Apple Intelligence availability for your language and region. The intelligent tab feature has narrower device requirements than iOS 27 as a whole.
